What is the Best Way to Apply Serum on the Face?

Face serums are formulated to address a variety of skin concerns—from sun damage and fine lines to dull complexion and dry skin. But, no matter how potent the ingredients, these products need to be applied correctly to achieve maximum benefits.

Whether you want to hydrate, replenish, or stave off signs of aging, you’ll need to follow these steps when using a serum.

First Step: Cleanse

Serums are generally lightweight products. They’re either formulated as gels or oils, or have a thinner water-like consistency.

Regardless of the properties of your favorite serum, it should ALWAYS be applied to freshly cleansed skin, as this allows active ingredients to be more readily absorbed. Clean skin free of makeup and impurities is ready to soak up revitalizing actives like Vitamin C, hyaluronic acid, and peptides.

Second Step: Apply Mist or Toner

When it comes to harnessing the power of your serum clinically-proven ingredients, the correct layering of skincare products is crucial. So remember: your lightest, thinnest skincare products should be applied before heavier ones.

After cleansing, your thinnest product will likely be a facial toner or hydrating mist. Apply the toner or mist across your entire face, including the cheeks, nose, chin, and hairline. Since neck skin is one of the first to show signs of aging, don’t forget this area during your morning and evening beauty routine.

Third Step: Apply Serum

Freshly dampened with mist or toner, your skin will be more permeable and receptive to a nutrient-rich serum—so now’s the time to apply it! Serums are designed to be potent—so remember that less is more. A pea-sized amount or two or three drops is all you need.

Use your fingertips to gently smooth the serum over your face and neck with light tapping motions. Draw your fingertips outward and upward until you have full coverage.

If you are using a collagen face mask as part of your evening self-care routine, this step comes after cleansing, toning, and serum application.

Fourth Step: Let Serum Absorb

Avoid temptation to massage or rub the serum into your skin, as it will absorb on its own. Let the serum sit on your skin for a few minutes, allowing it to penetrate deep into your pores. Once the serum is absorbed, your skin should feel clean and replenished, but not sticky or oily.

Fifth Step: Apply Moisturizer

Serums can be incredibly hydrating but do not replace a daily moisturizer. Instead, they are meant to work in tandem with a moisturizer’s emollient ingredients.

Once the serum has dried and fully penetrated your skin, it’s time to nourish the skin’s outer layers with a heavier product. Moisturizers are thicker and have more viscosity than serums and should always be applied last to seal in the super-concentrated serum and lock in moisture.
